Cells are the basic units of life. Cells come from other cells. excretion of waste, etc; more efficient. area ratio. Animal cells are usually 10-100 microns long. Bacterial cells range from 1-10 microns long. Cells are small because there"s a greater volume to surface area ratio for absorption of nutrients, Some exceptions(e. g. egg cells)=> cells developed strategies increase volume to surface. Scientists use light and electron microscopes in order to view cells. Resolution: helps to distinguish two points/objects; helps focus on object. Contrast: ability to distinguish objects from background. Inexpensive and popular however, limited by resolution ability; if an object is smaller than the wavelength of light, it is impossible to resolve using light microscope. Bright-field microscopy: shines through sample and magnifies it using a series of lenses; contrast is required in order to view specimen. Fluorescence microscopy: special fluorescent stains that make features visible that can"t be achieved using other techniques.
