They arrive at the monastery: all men (fyodor, mi sov and friend pyotr fomitch kalganov, ivan) except dmitri arrive at monastery. The men agree to behave while in the monastery but they struggle not to revert to their bickering or rudeness. The monk that receives them before zossima seems worried. The old buffoon: zossima enters the room and blesses a novice and alyosha. They touch the ground and kiss his hand and bow. All of the men bow to zossima but none kiss his hand > alyosha is ashamed: zossima. Short, 65 years old, looks 10 years older. Fyodor seems to nervously not be able to stop talking. Mi sov gets fed up with fyodor"s rambling and finally shouts at him (page 43: no one had ever entered the monastery before that did not feel grateful and honored to be there. No one has ever acted with the amount of buffoonery fyodor acts with.
