The diffusion of european cultures into tribal societies: academic and applied anthropology. After wwii: anthropology became standard part of college curriculum. Still mostly worked in colleges and museums in 1970s and 1980s: applied anthropology today. A helping profession devoted to assisting local people and sticking up for their disenfranchisement. Have clients that are neither poor not powerless. Identifying needs for change that local people perceive. Working with those people to design culturally appropriate and socially sensitive change. Protecting local people from harmful policies and projects. Developmental anthropology that may threaten them: the branch of applied anthropology that focuses on social issues in, and the cultural dimensions of, economic development, equity.
