Ideas of galileo, copernicus, descartes, spinoza, william harvey, newton. Artists were in direct contact w their public. Florentine camerata -- a group of intellectual writers, artists, and musicians in. Wanted to resurrect drama of ancient grecian music, thought it had only 1 melody. Monody camerate developed this style, only 1 melody line plus instrumental accompaniment (homophonic) vs renaissance emphasis on counterpoint. Added music to dramas to create the opera. Combines instrumental and vocal music w poetry and drama. Figured bass -- indicated a what chord was required for a section of music. Chords were filled in impromptu from the notated bass line (figured bass) Led to creation of major-minor tonality -- tonic was valued. A new tuning system called equal temperament let every instrument be equal". Each half-step was tuned at an equal distance.
