PSYCH 2220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Crowdsourcing, Convenience Sampling, Null Hypothesis
Document Summary
Random sample: every member of the pop has an equal chance of being selected. Convenience sample: uses participants who are readily available (like college students) You can use a random #s table to help. Truly random #s often have strings of #s that do not seem to be random. These may not represent the whole pop. Generalizability: researcher"s ability to apply findings from one sample or in one context to other samples or contexts. You can increase external validity through replication: the duplication of scientific results, ideally in a different context or with a sample that has diff characteristics (sometimes called reproducibility) Be cautious when using a volunteer sample: (aka self-selected sample), a convenience sample in which participants actively choose to participate in a study. Crowdsourcing can be bad bc researchers have no control over who participates. If ppl volunteer, you"re probably only getting the extremes (highly liked or highly disliked)
