Red caused performance to get worse: example 2: eating pasta. The size of serving bowl had substantial influence on what people ate. A study in which one variable is manipulated and the other is measured. A potential variable that an experimenter holds constant on purpose. Why experiments support causal claims: three rules for causation. A group in an experiment whose level on the independent variable differs from those of the treatment group in some intended and meaningful way. If independent variable did not vary, study cannot establish. A level of an independent variable that is intended to represent no treatment or neutral effect. The participants in an experiment who are exposed to the level of the independent variable that involves a medication, therapy or intervention. A control group that is exposed to an inert treatment.
