Chapter 1: what is psychological abnormality, abnormal psychology. The scientific study of abnormal behavior in an effort to describe, predict, explain and change abnormal patterns of functioning: deviance. Depend on specific circumstances as well as on cultural norms. A society"s stated and unstated rules for proper conduct. A people"s common history, values, institutions, habits, technology and arts: distress. Behavior, ideas or emotions have to cause distress before called abnormal: dysfunction. Upsets, distracts or confuses people that they cannot care for themselves properly, participate in ordinary social interactions or work productively: danger. Behavior that is consistently careless, hostile, or confused may put themselves or others in danger: the elusive nature of abnormality. Healer whose expertise is accepted by the sufferer and his/her social groups. Series of contacts between the healer and the sufferer. How was abnormality viewed and treated in the past: ancient views and treatments.
