Five needs communication meets: physical (helps us stay healthy, relational ( being happily married is more important than income, job status, education, and leisure time ) Identity (how others view me: spiritual (through communication, we can express and share spiritual ideas with our peers) When individuals are without human interaction for extended periods of time, both their mental and physical health can suffer (ex: heart disease, high blood pressure, or premature death) Stigma- a characteristic that discredits a person, making that individual to be seen as abnormal or undesirable. It is shown that meaningful conversations lead to happiness (not small talk ) Interacting and communicating with others shape how we see ourselves: the nature of communication (pg. Encode- to put an idea into language or gesture (goes with the source) Decode- to interoperate or give meaning to a message (goes with the receiver)
