Chapter 10: interpersonal communication in romantic & family relationships: the nature of intimate relationships. Intimacy significant emotional closeness experienced in a relationship. We have to be more willing to put aside minor differences and make compromises to make intimate relationships work and last. Intimate relationships include emotional commitment (a sense of responsibility for each other"s feeling and emotional well-being) and social commitment (motivates us to spend time together, to compromise, and to be generous with praise. Interdependence what happens to one person affects everyone else in the relationship. Depends on the degree of interdependence (wouldn"t sell my house and move if my friend relocated) Intimate relationships usually have a higher degree of investment (the resources we put into our relationships) Ex: if we drift apart from our siblings during adulthood, we retain memories of our relationships, but we can"t retrieve the time, attention, and material resources we invested in them.
