Chapter 11: interpersonal conflict: the nature of interpersonal conflict. Interpersonal conflict- an expressed struggle between interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from one another. Having a conflict is more than just disagreeing. Conflict occurs when you have made others aware of how you feel. Conflict = a behavior (verbal and nonverbal) A disagreement can become a conflict if the individuals depend on each other. Conflict often involves resources that are perceived to be limited. Ex: siblings arguing over the last piece of pie. Conflict is often a result of perceiving that our goals are incompatible with another person"s goals. Incompatible (in this case) = when it"s impossible to satisfy both goals. Conflict comes about when people act in ways that prevent each other from achieving their goals. Conflict is a war - conflict is a game. Conflict is a trial -conflict is a heroic adventure. Conflict is a struggle - conflict is a balancing act.
