Document Summary

Matter : anything that takes up space and has mass. All matter (living or nonliving) is made up of elements. Elements- cannot be broken down or transformed into another substance & contains a nucleus and orbiting electrons. Atoms are composed of subatomic particles: neutrons (no electrical charge, protons (positive charge) All electrically neutral atom have the same number of protons and electrons. Isotopes- have the same number of protons, but differ the number of neutrons. Radioactive isotopes- low levels of radioactive isotopes can be used in medical imaging. Marie curie- constant exposure to high levels can cause cancer. Nonpolar covalent bonds- atoms share the electron equally (methane, oxygen gas) Acid- any substance that increases the h + concentration of a solution. Base- any substance that reduces the h + concentration of a solution. Buffers- a chemicals that keeps ph within normal limits ph scale- indicates the acidity or basicity of solution.
