ANTH 003 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Moe Williams, Ethnoarchaeology, Sub-Saharan Africa
Document Summary
The study of human history from its origin to present day. Study of the human past through its material remains. Our primary means of adaptation to the environment. Culture is shared, it is accumulative and it is constantly changing. Archaeology culture: assemblage of archaeological remains from a specific time and place that are associated with a specific human society. Material culture: products that were made by humans to satisfy their needs. Artifact: made or modified by humans, and is portable. Seeds/ animal remains to tell us what they were doing/ how they lived/ their environment. Features: landscape modified by humans, but not portable. Ex. ) garbage areas, burials, rock art, houses and structures, roads, canals, agricultural fields, massive sculptures. Midden unintentional accumulation of garbage resulting from human activity. Artifacts + ecofacts + features = archeological record. Not trained archaeologists but curious about the past. We only keep those that cannot be disproved. Either supported or rejected by the data.
