THEA 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: First Folio, Tamburlaine, Blank Verse
Document Summary
Throughout most of europe during the centuries following the destruction of the roman. Empire, the primary authority was the catholic church: in the fourth century, the church outlawed theatre and with good reason. Christians had been a target of mockery in the entertainments of the late. Many included allegory, the use of characters that represent one of the seven vices and virtues. Others drew from the bible and transformed the whole into a long series of pageant wagon/theatres. Each wagon, or station, told one part of the biblical story, from creation through redemption and/or damnation. Individual medieval plays are often designated by one of three types: miracle plays: these present an account of the life, miracles, or martyrdom of a saint recognized by the catholic church. They appear to have evolved out of church services devoted to the saint"s day in liturgical calendar during the tenth and eleventh centuries.
