Lithosphere the rock and sediment beneath our feet. Hydrosphere- all water in surface bodies, underground, and in the atmosphere. Biosphere all living organisms and the abiotic portions of the environment. Delineation of a system is up to the questions/problems that need addressing. Matter - all material that takes up space: law of conservation of matter it cannot be created or destroyed, is recycled thru cycles and systems. Element chemical substance w/ a given set of properties: hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, composed of atoms, protons, neutrons, and electrons. Isotopes atoms with differing numbers of neutrons: o(cid:373)e are radioacti(cid:448)e a(cid:374)d (cid:862)decay(cid:863) Atoms can bond together to form molecules: compound molecule composed of two or more different elements, water/carbon dioxide. Solutions homogenous mixtures of substances: human blood, ocean water, air in the atmosphere. Two types of energy: potential energy of positon, water prevented moving downstream by a dam, kinetic energy of motion, water rushing downstream.
