Emotions: characterized by neural and physiological responses, subjective feelings, cognitions related to those feelings, and the desire to take action. Theories on the nature and emergence of emotion. Charles darwin argued that facial expressions for certain basic emotional states are innate to the species and are found even in very young babies. Differential emotions theory: each emotion is innately packaged with a specific set of physiological, bodily, and facial reactions and that distinct emotions can be differentiated very early in life. Functionalist approach- role of the environment emphasized by theorists, understanding emotional development. Dynamic processing theories specifically deal with how child"s characteristics and experiences coalesce (come together) in emotional processing. Emergence of emotion in early years and childhood. Positive emotions: first month- smiling, 3rd and 8th week of life- smile in response to external stimuli, 3rd month- exhibit social smiles- directed towards people. 4 months- infants do seem wary of unfamiliar objects and events.
