He is also interested in what he calls the constitution of subjects. His writings are about power and the constitution of subjects, but the law is a part of that. Uses the word druidical when talking about the law. For this book he writes under the premise of what he calls genealogy. His writing is historical in order to understand today. Not just the study of history for the sake of history. Acknowledges that the present can be very complex. Methodologically he says that the present is very contingent. It is simply a result of different forces coming together, etc. Things could"ve been different and, therefore, things still can be different. In less than 100 years, there is a profound change in punishment. The change is not in just tactics, but in objectives. To not punish the body, but punish the soul. Changes in the mode of labor changed the kinds of punishment.
