Learning as the storage of memories: amnesia: Anterograde amnesia- an impairment in forming new memories. Retrograde amnesia- the inability to remember events prior to impairment. His retrograde amnesia extended from the time of his surgery back to about the age of 16. He had few memories from that period, but did not remember the end of world war ii or his own graduation, did not remember anyone he graduated with. Hippocampus/temporal lobe & amnesia: mechanisms of consolidation & retrieval. Consolidation- the process in which the brain forms a more or less permanent physical representation of a memory. Retrieval- the process of accessing stored memories the act of remembering . Short term memory is seconds to hours. Long term memory is hours to months. Long lasting memory is months to lifetime. The prefrontal cortex is active during learning and retrieval. The hippocampus is activated during successful retrieval: where memories are stored.
