Irene is part black, but people perceive her as white/italian because she looks as such. White people thought they could tell who was white based on: fingernails, palms, ears, and teeth. Afraid of being kicked out, was not ashamed of being negro . Irene invites clare back to harlem and then regrets it, mentioning the restrictions and distinctions of the negro community.
