Document Summary
Scieniic study of diversity of organisms & evoluionary relaionships. Two parts: taxonomy science of describing, naming, & classifying organisms, phylogeny evoluionary history of a species or group of related species, binomial nomenclature. Invented by carolus linnaeus nat philosopher (darwinian lecture) Each species assigned unique 2 part name binomial. Consists of genus to which it belongs + speciic epithet (name) Escherichia": speciic epithet not necessarily unique is never used alone cannot say species coli". Above species level many levels of classiicaion hierarchy. The taxonomic groups from broad to narrow are domain to species. = grouping of organisms at any one of these levels. Each taxonomic level is more inclusive (has more species) than the one below. Taxonomist group organisms together based on paricular characterisics. Ex: cats: family felidae: all sp share short face, modiied teeth, order carnivora: all sp have modiied teeth: shearing meat. Includes: dogs, bears, raccoons : class mammalia: all species have hair and produce milk.
