Crowning: during labor in the 2nd stage, the appearance of the top of baby"s head. One key to reduce birth pain without drugs is relaxation: supportive adult (father-to-be, relative, close friends or trained birth assistant (aka doula) Woman experiences many physical changes: breasts begin to produce milk and her uterus gradually becomes smaller, returning to its normal size in 5-6 weeks. That is, the first few days of life were thought to be a critical period for close physical contact between parents and babies; without such contact, parents and babies would find it difficult to bond emotionally. For 10-15% of new mothers irritability continues for months and is often accompanied by feelings of low self-worth, disturbed sleep, poor appetite, and apathy a condition known as postpartum depression. Biology contributes: change in hormonal levels following birth place some women at risk for postpartum depression. Women who are healthy when they become pregnant usually have a normal pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
