Word decoding: process of identifying a unique pattern of letters. Without knowing russian, your word recognition was not successful in the first sentence because you could not recognize individual words, you had no idea of the meaning of this sentence. Comprehension: process of extracting meaning from a sequence of words. Word recognition may be perfect but comprehension is impossible if it"s a jumble of words. Children need to know that reading is done with words made of letters, not with pictures or scribbles (that words are separated by spaces and that in english, you read from left to right) These skills improve gradually over the preschool years. Children who know more about letters and words forms learn to read more easily than their peers who know less. Phonological awareness: the ability to distinguish the sounds in spoken words. Phonological awareness is shown when children can decompose words in this manner .
