Etiology- cause of an abnormal disorder; usually remains a mystery. Biological- imbalanced brain chemistry to genetic predispositions. Social and cultural- family relationships to sexual and racial bias. Biochemical paradigm-looks for bio abnormalities that might cause abnormal behavior. Gave hope that scientists would discover biological caused for other mental disorders; caused by syphilis a sexually. Psychodynamic paradigm- created by freud; asserts that abnormal behavior is caused by unconscious mental conflicts that have roots in early childhood. Freud- came up with the psychoanalytic theory (id, ego, superego) Defense mechanisms (denial, displacement, projection, rationalization, reaction formation, repression, sublimation)- Repression- pushes threatening thoughts and ideas into unconscious. Denial- refusal to acknowledge/ anxiety provoking stimuli. Reaction formation- hides threatening impulses by over emphasizing the opposite. Rationalization- creating logical socially acceptable explanations for behaviors which were actually driven by unconscious impulses. Intellectualization- translates a threatening situation tinto cold intellectual terms. Displacement- shifting one"s unconscious aggression or fears to a safer target.
