Traumatic disorders all share the same characteristic of dissociation. Dissociation- the disruption of the normally integrated mental processes involved in memory, consciousness, identity, or perception. Traumatic stress- a event that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury to self or others and creates intense feelings of fear, helplessness, or horror. Everyone experiences events differently so not everyone will think the same thing will be traumatic. Acute stress disorder- occurs within four weeks after exposure to a traumatic stress and characterized by dissociative symptoms as well as: Reexperiencing, avoidance or reminders, and marked anxiety or arousal. Avoidance and arousal but ptsd is either longer lasting or has delayed onset: do not need dissociative symptoms. Prolonged exposure to the trauma is a common treatment bc desensitizing. To help form the complete episodic memory which helps with intrusive flashbacks. Asd is included in dsm 5 bc .
