01:830:340 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Hypnotic, Hashish, Cannabinoid
Chapter 11
● Substance use (operant conditioning)- maladaptive pattern of behaviors that are related
to the continued use of drugs, despite the fact that it creates many problems for the user.
● Alcohol use (symptoms, epidemiology, delirium tremens. Controlled drinking, SORC
method)
○ Alcohol effects basically every part of the body
■ It’s absorbed in the stomach, small intestine, colon
○ Alcohol intoxication- results in slurred speech, uncoordinated, unsteady gait,
nystagmus, impaired attention and memory, coma
● Caffeine use (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal, neurotransmitter effects)
● Nicotine use (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal, neurotransmitter effects)
○ Short term effects-
■ Increased heart rate and BP
■ Stimulates the release of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin
○ Tolerance and withdrawal symptoms-
■ Drowsiness
■ Lightheadedness
■ Headaches and muscle tremors
● Cannabinoid use (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal, neurotransmitter effects, medical
uses)- marijuana, hashish, weed, etc.
○ Temporal disintegration- a condition in which people have trouble retaining and
organizing information, even over relatively short periods of time.
○ Reverse tolerance
● Stimulant use (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal, neurotransmitter effects)
○ Examples are: cocaine and amphetamines
○ Psychomotor stimulants- produce their effect by stimulating the actions of
certain neurotransmitters (i.e. dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine)
● Barbiturates and benzodiazepines (sedatives) (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal,
neurotransmitter effects)
○ Aka tranquilizers, hypnotics, and sedatives
○ Short term effects
■ State of intoxication similar to opiates
○ Long term-
■ Anxiety symptoms may come back
● Opioids use (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal, neurotransmitter effects)
○ Using opioids can induce a dreamlike euphoria
○ Short term effects-
■ Temporary dreamlike state
○ Long term effects-
■ People who take high does become very lethargic and less productive
■ People who take low does can function productively, but that also
depends on the fact that they have access to opiates almost at all times
● Hallucinogen use (symptoms, intoxication, withdrawal, neurotransmitter effects,
hallucinogen persisting perception disorder)
