The definition of cool evolved in the inner city for young boys that grew up on the streets. At first, it started with being able to conquer the street life and gaining their. Then, cool turned into survival bc a person has reached their level of coolness, so the only option after that is to leave the inner city or just wither away. 60"s became a time of discovery for black people. This taught young men in the inner city that being cool is more than risking your life. Self love for cornrows and physical look related stuff was embraced rather than hated. Emmett till incident shows the difference between urban black and southern black. In the south, it was life or death for blacks. Men in prison weren"t seen as criminals, but as political prisoners. Author claims it"s because of malcolm x. He embraced the muslim religion which influenced other black people to do the same.
