Deindividuation- focus on the role reduces individual"s awareness of self as an independent individual who is personally responsible for an outcome. Physicians, lawyers, and accountants identify more closely with their organizational role than professional. Requirements makes it easier for the reporter because the behavior becomes a duty rather than voluntary ethical acts. Individuals often feel that they owe the organization and manager their loyalty- reinforcing pressure to comply. Authority figures must send powerful signals that high ethical standards are expected and that they are expected to question authority figures. Sense of personal responsibility is a prereq for moral action. Individual often becomes disconnected from consequences of his or her action and not personally responsible. At higher levels, individuals are told not to worry and that the problem is someone else"s responsibility. Individuals will come to believe that it isn"t their responsibility to be on lookout for ethical problems.
