Document Summary

With the catholic church acting as their mediator before christ, a sinner could thus legitimately use these methods to seek absolution for their sins. Yet there was much more to the conflict than simply selling indulgences. Luther and others started to question the legitimacy by which the catholic church founded its belief in buying and selling indulgences. There arose a bigger question as to whether or not the catholic. Church had or might have claimed the right to offer redemption. The church argued that after the fact of repentance and absolution, indulgence was a substitute for other penances. Whatever the catholic church"s meaning, others couldn"t see the distinction and others didn"t feel there was one. One of these was martin luther and his reaction would change the christian world forever. The church also offered indulgence as a means of removing temporary punishment which would otherwise have to be paid with the time spent in purgatory.
