Document Summary

Definition and measurement: the problems of human growth in the 1990s appear to be moving towards the centre. For too long the recurring problem was, how much a nation produces. The query now being raised is how the people are faring. The main reason for this shift is the increasing realization that the real aim of growth is to increase the people"s choices. Income is just one of those choices and an incredibly significant one but it"s not the total sum of human life. Developing countries have in fact accomplished the sort of real human development over the past 30 years that developed nations have taken nearly a century to achieve. And true, there is still a massive and unfinished agenda for human development. With one-fourth of the population in developed countries still deprived of basic human needs, minimum income and decent social services.
