SOC 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Santa Barbara City College, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, External Validity
Document Summary
Correlational work aims at defining and testing theories about the relationships between two or more variables. In these experiments, a calculation called the pearson correlation coefficient is used to summarize the relationship, or correlation, between the variables. Since scientists are keen to establish the causal relationships between variables, they often use designs for experimental research. In tests the target variable is called the independent variable and the dependent variable. The most popular method of establishing equivalence between the experimental conditions, and thus that internal validity, through random assignment to conditions. External validity refers to the degree to which relationships can be expected to hold back once they are reassessed in different ways and for different individuals. Meta-analysis can be used to determine the observed associations between variables across many studies. 1. research the principles of learning through group, affiliation, and observer, and explain their similarities and differences.
