Document Summary

The united states has been said to be the melting pot of different cultures. With this being said, it should come as no surprise that in today"s society a common question has emerged. The question is whether a person"s identity is the direct result of their inherited genetics or their cultural environment. This idea is best represented in zadie smith"s novel, white teeth, by the identical twin characters, magid and millat iqbal. Throughout the novel, smith explored how the outcomes of one"s heritage impacted the formation of their traits and personalities. Several times characters were faced with situations that required them to negotiate their identities. From the very beginning of the novel it is clear that millat"s very moldable identity resulted from the influence of the media. At a young age millat developed a love for video games and popular culture.
