ENGL 231 Chapter : Week 10 GE Round 2
Document Summary
Another prevalent theme throughout chapters 1-18 of great expectations was pip"s sense of unescapable guilt. This is seen several times within the text. After reading the lecture lecture notes, i learned that the root of pip"s constant sense of guilt stems from his sisters abuse. She made him feel guilty for just about everything he did and emphasized her point with the tickler. Although some readers may think pip"s guilt was excessive, i think that his life experiences justify his feelings. We have to realize often times our sense of guilt is not always proportionate to our actions. People can feel guilty over behavior, feelings, or thoughts that can be perceived as natural, minor, or out of one"s control. A more modern example of this could be a child taking responsibility for their parents" divorce and feeling guilty.
