Stress: a physical and psychological response to a harmful or potentially harmful circumstance. Stressors: the events or conditions that put a strain on the organism and pose a challenge to its efforts to adjust. Daily hassles: the seemingly minor irritations that can create as much stress as major life events. Conflict: the simultaneous arousal of two or more incompatible motives resulting in unpleasant emotions such as anxiety or anger. Cognitive appraisal: a person"s subjective interpretation of a potentially stressful episode. Primary appraisal: a type of cognitive appraisal in which the individual assesses the personal meaning of the stressor. Secondary appraisal: a type of cognitive appraisal in which the individual assesses alternative ways of coping. General adaptation syndrome: according to selye, the sequence of events involved in prolonged stress, including the alarm phase, the resistance phase and the exhaustion phase. Somatoform disorder: a bodily ailment that stems at least in part from psychological issues.
