Chapter 7: marriage and family (week 4 - kinship) Family is the most basic way social life is organized. Think about marriage in human society as a partnership between families who join together in a relationship that is based on an exchanged. Families of orientation include your parents and siblings, which families of procreation are spouses and offspring. Monogamy: marriage between two people; most common in the westerm industrial world. Why? (1) strict religious rules (2) monogamy works best in countries that rely on independence training to raise their children. This has social, economic, and political functions together, and labor distribution. There are benefits for producing and raising children, keeping land holdings. Polygyny: most preferred type of polygamous marriage arrangement in societies around the world (having two or more wives at the same time)
