PSY 103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Opiate, Methadone, Codeine
Document Summary
Stimulants- drugs that increase energy, alertness and activity. Amphetamine, methamphetamine and cocaine bock the protein that the presynaptic neuron uses to reabsorb dopamine, or reverse it so that it releases dopamine instead of absorbing it, leaving excess dopamine in the system. Stimulant drugs increase the effects of those transmitters at their receptors. Cocaine was a drug that has been around for a long time. Freebase cocaine- has hydrochloride removed which can then be sniffed. Crack cocaine- freebase cocaine that comes in rocks to be smoked, cracks . The behavioral effects of drugs depend on the dose. Higher doses- leads to confusion, impaired attention and impulsiveness. Physical effects- higher heart rate, blood pressure, temp, lung damage and heart attack. As amphetamine enters the brain, it produces pleasant effects. Because the drugs are inhibiting the uptake of neurotransmitters, they wash away faster than they can be replaced.
