The course of prenatal development: three phases. Cell mass implants itself in uterine wall on about the seventh day. Structure that allows oxygen and nutrients to pass into the fetus from the mother"s bloodstream and bodily wastes to pass out to the mother: embryonic stage. From 2 weeks until the end of the second month. Most vital organs and bodily systems begin to form. If anything interferes with normal development during this time the effects can be devastating. Most miscarriages and causes of structural birth defects occur during the embryonic stage: fetal stage. First 2 months of fetal stage see rapid bodily growth. Capable of physical movements as skeletal structures harden. Sense of hearing is functional around 20-24 weeks. During final 3 months brain cells multiply at a brisk pace.
