Sources of law: four sources of law: Legislative law (statutory law)- consists of the enactments of an elected, legislative body, such as the california state assembly or the u. s congress. Ordinance- another form of written legislative law, usually referring to the laws passed by a local government body, such as a city council or county board of supervisors. Statutes and ordinances remain in force until replaced or ruled unconstitutional. Judicial law- derives from the process of adjudication, the process by which courts apply statutes, ordinances, or constitutional provisions to the facts of a particular case. The process of adjudication calls upon courts to issue rulings based upon the application of the written law to various circumstances. Lawyers sometimes call judge-made law, case law or common law. State decisis- the process of following the points of law established by other courts in earlier cases. Following precedent- precedent refers to the authority of a prior ruling in a similar case.
