Hostile agression: behavior intended to harm another motivated by feelings of anger and hostility. Instrumental agression: behavior intended to harm another in the service of motives other than pure hostility (ex: attracting attention, wealth, status) Situational determinants of aggression: a situational perspective is crucial to have an adequate understanding of aggression. Certain genes predispose people to aggression, but these genes increase the likelihood of aggressive action only in certain circumstances. Situations give rise to aggressive tendencies: hot weather anger raises the temp of the body with accelerated heart rate and increased distribution of blood. Playing video games increase aggressive behavior, reduce prosocial behavior, increase aggressive thoughts, increase aggressive emotions, increase blood pressure and heart rate. People who are rejected report higher levels of chronic pain, also more likely to resort to physical abuse in relationships. Income inequality presence of parks and green spaces in the neighborhood and economic conditions influence levels of aggression.
