BIOL 1111 Chapter Notes - Chapter 23: Allele Frequency, Gene Duplication, Gregor Mendel

46 views5 pages

Document Summary

Individuals cannot evolve, only a population of a species can evolve over many generations. Natural selection acts on individuals by affecting its survival and ability to produce offspring. Ex: birds with larger beaks were able to eat the larger plentiful seeds and survive better therefore the next generation had larger beaks on average. Change in allele (alternative form of a gene) frequencies in a population over generations. Genetic variation: what makes evolution possible and often reflects individual variation. They are differences in the composition of genes and dna segments within organisms. Individuals vary in their physical appearance which is easy to identify but they also all have molecular variations which cannot be seen or heard. Some phenotypes (product of inherited genotype and many environmental influences) are not heritable. Ex: bodybuilders alter their phenotype but cannot pass their muscles on, only genetically determined phenotypes can pass through evolution.
