Document Summary

The reproductive remains dormant for several years after birth. 10 in girls a surge of pituitary gonadotropins awakens the reproductive system and begins preparing it for adult reproductive function starting puberty. The testes secrete substantial amount of testosterone in the first trimester of fetal development. In the first few months of infancy testosterone levels are about as high as they are in mid puberty. The hypothalamus matures and produces gonadotropin releasing hormone (gnrh) which travels to the anterior lobe of the pituitary. Here it stimulates cells called gonadotropins to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (fsh) and luteinizing hormone (lh) that stimulate different cells in the testis. Lh stimulates the cells in the testes to secrete androgens mainly testosterone. In males it"s sometimes called interstitial cell- stimulating hormone. Fsh stimulates androgen-binding protein (abp) which binds testosterone and accumulates in the lumen of the seminiferous tubules and epididymis. Without fsh and abp testosterone has no effect on the testes.
