Document Summary

Chapter 2: fuel for exercise: bioenergetics and muscle metabolism. All energy originates from the sun as solar energy. Humans get energy by eating animals or plants. Nutrients from food are in the form of carbs, fats, and protein and are called the basic fuels or energy substrates. Can be broken down to release stored energy. Bioenergetics- each cell has chemical pathways to convert the substrates into energy for he body to use. Amount of energy released during a reaction can be found by the amount of heat produced. Energy is measured in calories- amount of heat energy needed to raise 1g of water 1c. Free energy in cells is used for growth and repair. Used for active transport of substances (sodium, potassium, calcium) When chemical bonds break (bonds that hold elements together), energy is released. The energy our body needs at rest is met by the breakdown of carbs and fats.
