NURS 2589 Chapter Notes - Chapter 41: Unequal Leg Length, Intervertebral Disc, Spinal Stenosis
Document Summary
D/t lumbosacral areas, disc problems, unequal leg length. Older patients pain is associated with osteoporotic vertebral fractures, osteoarthritis of the spine, and spinal stenosis. Disuse weakens the supporting muscular structures that absorb shocks from running on the spine, and help with lifting and protection of the spinal cord. Obesity, postural problems, structural problems and overstretching of spina supports ma result in back pain. Disc degeneration- overtime, the fibrocartilage becomes dense and irregularly shaped. Radiculopathy pain - pain radiating down the leg. Affects fait, spinal mobility, reflexes, leg length, leg motor strength and sensory perception. Findings suggest if it is lumbar strain or a potentially serious problem such as spinal fracture, cancer, infection, or rapidly increasing neuro deficits. Usually self limiting and resolves within 4-6 weeks with analgesics, rest, and avoidance of strain. Meds or nonpharmacological interventions such as thermal applications and spinal manipulation (chiropactice), yoga, exercise, spinal manipulation, acupuncture, massage.
