Baby assimilates incoming info to schemes it"s born withaccommodates schemes based on experiencecalled sensorimotor intelligence. Coordination between looking and listening, reaching and looking, etc. Primary circular reactions- repetitive actions organized around their own body. Ex: baby sucks thumb, likes it, and keeps doing it. Baby repeats action to trigger reaction outside of body. Means-end behavior- ability to make a goal and a plan to achieve it. Tertiary circular reactions- tries out variations of an action. Sounds or facial expression to make mom smile. No trial and error behavior like in stage 5. Know something exists even when you can"t see it. Starts at 2 months, look surprised when toy taken away as if something should be there. At 6-8 months, babies will look for dropped toys and search for partially hidden objects (know whole object is there) 8-12 months, babies will search for fully hidden toy.
