Document Summary
Common techniques in behavioral endocrinology (this section describes some of the primary methods and techiniques used in behavioral endocrinology) The ablation (removal or extirpation) of the suspected source of a hormone to determine its funation is a classic technique in endocrinology. A gland that is suspected to be the source of a hormone affecting a hebaior is surgically removed. The hormone is replaves by reimplanting the removal gland, by injecting a homogenate or extract from the gland (or by injecting a purified hormone) A determination is made whether the observed consequences of ablation have been reveresed by the replacement therapy. A traditional complementary approach to the ablation-replacement techniqye is the observation of bahavior in individuals with diseased or congenitally dysfunctional endocrine organs. When ablation occurs in the brain, the result is often called a lesion. Modern complementary approaches include administeration of drugs to block hormone synthesis or hormone receptor activity.
