The number of scores in the distribution. X i means sum of the squared x. ( x th score, where i can vary from 1 to n. = 1 to n scores scores and then square this sum. Nominal scales - lowest level of measurement. Most often used with variables that are qualitative instead of quantitative. E. g, brand of jogging shoes, kinds of fruit, types of music, days of the month, nationality, eye color. Variable is divided into its several categories. Categories comprise the units of the scale, and objects are measured by determining which category they belong to. Fundamental property of nominal scales = equivalence. All members of a given class are the same form the standpoint of the classification variable. Common calculation is counting the number of objects in each category. Ordinal scales - the numbers on the scale represent rank ordering, rather than raw score magnitude. Posses a relatively low level of the property of magnitude.
