In 1584 suggested the existence of planets around other stars. 1995 announced detection of first extrasolar planets. Most detections are by doppler method and jupiter mass planets. Finding planets the doppler wobble way. Dark lines are absorptions due to elements in the star. They shift slightly due to the doppler effect as the orbiting planet causes a wobble in star. A cell containing iodine gas is used as a reference to measure the shifts of the spectral lines. Most planets are jupiter mass (318 earth masses) or higher. Find a number of lower mass planets (down to neptune mass of 17 earth masses) and lower (super earths of less than 10 earth masses) but these are detectable at short orbital periods. Hot jupiters jupiter mass planets very close to star in orbits with periods of a few days. Eccentric giants jupiter mass planets in eccentric orbits of 1 or 2 au.
