Evolution- process of change that has transformed life on earth. Biology- the science of the study of life. New properties emerge at each level in the biological hierarchy. Emergent properties- emerge at each step zooming out , not present at preceeding level. Due to arrangement and interactions of parts as complexity increases. Reductionism- approach of reducing complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study. Systems biology- approach that attempts to model the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems based on the interaction os the system"s parts. Organisms interact w/ other organisms and the physical environment. Organisms transform one form of energy to another. Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization. Analyzing a biological structure gives us clues about what it does and how it works. The cell is an organism"s basic unit of structure and function. Subdivided by internal membranes into various membrane-enclosed organelles. Dna not separated from cell by membrane-bound nucleus.
