Earliest views explained madness as resulting from possession by demons or evil spirits. People were removed from society so they would not bother others. Both biology and the environment affect all psychological disorders to some extent. The likelihood of developing a mental disorder can be influenced by sex, culture, genetics, etc. It is difficult to determine if someone actually has a psychological disorder. Many behaviors considered normal in one setting may be considered deviant in other settings. To fully understand a disorder, psychologists need to investigate its etiology: the factors that contribute to its development. Multiaxial system- based on the realization that various factors affect mental health. An alternative type of evaluation, called a dimensional approach, is to consider mental disorders along a continuum. The process of examining a person"s mental functions and psychological health is known as assessment. Primary foal is to make a diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can be provided.
