Dissociative Disorders
Some of a person's thoughts, feelings, perceptions, memories or behaviors are separated from
conscious awareness and control, in a way that is not explainable as mere forgetfulness
The disruptions in awareness, memory, and identity are extreme and/or frequent, and they cause
distress or impair the person's functioning
o Dissociative amnesia - at least one episodes of suddenly forgetting some important personal
information
o Dissociative fugue - goes on a journey, during which he or she cannot recall personal history
prior to the journey
o Dissociative identity disorder - alternates among two or more distinct personality states,
one of which interacts with other people at any one time
Multiple personality disorder
o Depersonalization disorder - recurring or persistent feeling of being cut off or detached from
his or her body or mental processes
Personality Disorders
Enduring, rigid set of personality traits that deviates from cultural norms, impairs functioning and
causes distress
In a personality disorder
o The pattern causes significant distress or impairment
o Has been present since adolescence or young adulthood
o Affects nearly all personal and social situations
o Affects at least two of affect, cognition, impulse control, and or interpersonal functioning
There are three clusters:
o Cluster A - paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal
Traits: irrational, withdrawn, cold and suspicious
o Cluster B - antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic
Traits: emotional, dramatic, attention-seeking and intense
o Cluster C - avoidant, dependent and obsessive compulsive
Traits: tense, anxious, over-controlled
Paranoid

deceiving, harming, betraying or attacking

Longer with little interest or involvement in close

paranoid thinking, odd beliefs, speech, behavior,
appearance and perceptions

Antisocial PD
History of serious behavior problems beginning as a
young teen, significant aggression, deliberate
property destruction, lying or theft, rule violation
Dishonest, impulsive,
physical aggression
Borderline PD
Enduring or recurrent instability in his or her impulse
control, and image of self and others. Unstable
Impulsive, reckless
