ES 207 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Tunica Media, Elastic Fiber, Simple Squamous Epithelium
Document Summary
Blood vessels carry blood within two or three cell diameters of nearly all the trillions of cells that make up the body. Pulmonary vessels: transport blood from the right ventricle through the lungs and back into the left atrium. Systemic vessels: transport blood through all parts of the body from the left ventricle and back into the right atrium. Transport substances (hormones, components of immune system, enzymes, coagulation molecules, gasses etc. ) Directs blood flow to the tissues where its required to maintain homeostasis. Three main types of vessels: arteries, capillaries, and veins. Arteries are classified as elastic arteries, muscular arteries and arterioles. Capillaries: blood flows from arterioles to capillaries where exchange is done between blood and tissues. They have thinner walls that arteries, blood flows slow. Veins: blood flows from capillaries to veins which carry blood back into the heart, usually oxygen poor blood, thinner than arteries, and contain less smooth and elastic tissue.
