Document Summary
Hammurabi"s code of laws depicts babylon as not having a free market economy. For example, if a physician heals the broken bone or diseased soft part of a man, the patient shall pay the physician five shekels in money. Differences in prices were set by the law and varied with social class. The code shows that there was specialization in labor due to the various occupations mentioned such as judge, builder, farmer, etc. and this led to separation of social classes. Workers did not have a lot of rights mentioned in the laws and were subject to stiff penalties for (perhaps unintentional) mistakes in their work. For example, if a physician make a large incision with the operating knife, and kill him, or open a tumor with the operating knife, and cut out the eye, his hands shall be cut off. These strict laws gave more incentive to do the work properly.
